In the thrilling world of Formula 1, surprises aren’t uncommon, but Red Bull’s recent take on Sergio Perez’s future certainly raises some eyebrows.
With recent performances labeled as “unsustainable” by the team, Perez is under the microscope. Despite his confidence about staying with Red Bull next year, the team’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko suggests things are still up in the air.
Marko emphasized this uncertainty when questioned about potential driver swaps not just for Perez, but also within their sister team. Daniel Ricciardo’s future appears dicey too. Marko revealed, “Yes, because we also have the Racing Bulls. So we have to consider everything.” Speculation about reserve driver Liam Lawson stepping in has been rife, but Marko dismissed it as premature to say the least.
Yuki Tsunoda’s comments on the matter, calling a Lawson pick “weird,” reflect the underlying tension. Marko’s response was pointed, “He should first wait what the decisions will be.” The guessing game includes Ricciardo, Tsunoda, and Lawson, but Marko keeps the door wide open, “That was a nice question. I’ll give a nice answer: everything is open.”
Perez, it seems, has a performance-related clause in his contract. If he doesn’t close the gap to Max Verstappen by 100 points, Red Bull might let him go this summer. Yet, Marko insists that beyond contracts, performance is what counts. He pointed to Perez’s strong showing in the Hungarian Grand Prix practices as a positive sign.
Meanwhile, Team Principal Christian Horner backs Perez, reminiscing about his stellar start this season. Horner shared, “We all want Checo to realize the potential that he did in the first four or five races… And I think he’s been in a bit of a head spin the last few races.” The team is rallying behind Perez, hoping he finds his groove again and contributes to their Constructors’ Championship aspirations.
Reflecting on their candid talks, Horner added, “We have a really open relationship… I sat down with him in the kitchen at my house and said: ‘Come on, what’s going on?’ He was like, no, I think I’m just overthinking things a bit too much.”
Red Bull faces a tough decision with a performance clause looming over Perez and the team striving to stay competitive. While everyone wants Perez to regain his early-season form, the reality of motorsport is that time is always ticking.
