During the Q1 qualifying session, Oscar Piastri, driving for McLaren, unintentionally blocked Kevin Magnussen from the Haas team. This incident took place at the tricky Tamburello complex, messing up Magnussen’s final attempt and causing him to qualify in 18th place, while his teammate Nico Hulkenberg made it to Q3.
Piastri explained that he didn’t see Magnussen coming in his mirrors because the main straight before Turn 2 curves to the left, making it hard to spot cars approaching from behind. The FIA race stewards understood Piastri’s explanation but emphasized that it was the team’s job to warn him about oncoming traffic. They noted that in all other instances that day, the team had correctly warned their drivers.
The stewards highlighted the speed difference between Piastri and Magnussen—about 140 km/h—and mentioned that Magnussen was only 40-50 meters behind when he caught up to Piastri. Because of this, Piastri ended up in the middle of the chicane just as Magnussen was on a fast lap.
“Traffic management for slower cars is an extremely important part of the team/driver combination, particularly in Q1,” the stewards mentioned. They decided that the lack of warning from the McLaren team caused an “unnecessary impeding” and gave Piastri a three-place grid penalty. This dropped him from second to fifth place for Sunday’s race.
McLaren’s team boss, Andrea Stella, accepted the decision and admitted that the team should have communicated better. “The assessment and the judgment of the stewards, we respect it,” Stella said. “We need to improve our operations. We move on and hopefully tomorrow we will recover the positions that we lost today on the grid.”
Despite the setback, Piastri remained optimistic. He was happy with McLaren’s progress and confident in the upgraded parts the team had provided for the race. “I’ve been happy with it all weekend to be honest, from the start of P1 all the way through qualifying,” he said. “Having parts that you know are going to make the car faster on the car is always a confidence boost.”
Piastri added that their long runs looked promising and noted that the competition had been incredibly tight this season. “Overtaking is very tough here, but I think we can be optimistic,” he said.
