Max Verstappen, facing unprecedented competition this season, is hopeful that Red Bull’s new upgrades will strengthen his car’s performance.
As the Formula 1 season advances into its high-stakes phases, Red Bull, once unchallenged, now finds itself amid fierce competition. Max Verstappen, who dominated the rounds initially, sees potential in the new enhancements brought to the RB20 for the Hungarian Grand Prix. “I think it’s just the way we set up the car, maybe also what we get back from the simulator, all these kinds of things need to be probably a bit better,” Verstappen shared. This sentiment reflects Red Bull’s recent struggle to stay ahead as rival teams Mercedes and McLaren make significant strides.
The changes, including a new engine cover and revised sidepods, among others, aim to adapt to the RB20’s handling on the tight and twisty Hungarian circuit. Verstappen admitted that the car felt better at the beginning of the season. However, as competitors have improved, Red Bull’s lighter upgrade approach has left them playing catch-up.
During the British Grand Prix, Verstappen fought his way back to contention thanks to savvy tire strategies in adverse conditions, highlighting the car’s need for more robust performance. “If you have a car that has better performance, it becomes a better car to drive as well because you don’t need to push it over or close to the limit,” he explained, underscoring the pressing need to find more speed and reliability from the RB20.
Yet, Verstappen remains unfazed, insisting that the team is working towards squeezing more performance within the confines of their reduced wind tunnel time—a consequence of leading the Constructors’ Championship. “I’m not using that as an excuse,” Verstappen noted, indicating his confidence in Red Bull’s capability despite the restrictions.
The Dutch driver further commented on the upheaval in the standings: “Other teams have shown that you can make big chunks. Naturally, in the past, when you’re the leading team and you’re doing very well, you tend to make smaller steps.” Despite this, he is firm in his belief that they can reclaim their pace with these new updates.
In the wake of increasing pressure from rival teams, Max Verstappen remains optimistic about Red Bull’s recent upgrades. Emphasizing the importance of continued development and strategic racing, Verstappen and his team hope to restore their competitive edge and maintain a strong position in the championship.
