Fernando Alonso considers it a ‘privilege’ that Adrian Newey might be heading to Aston Martin. The Formula 1 design genius is set to leave Red Bull after Q1 2025, and he won’t be short of job offers.

Alonso expressed his excitement about the possibility of Newey joining Aston Martin, calling it ‘good news.’ ‘He’s a legend of the sport and first of all I feel privileged to drive in this moment in Formula 1 and the last 20 years, sharing the sport with Adrian, obviously as a competitor,’ Alonso told Formula 1. ‘And it’s a privilege. To be linked with Aston Martin is already a good sign and good news for us that a legend of the sport and Aston Martin are linked somehow.’

The rumours around Newey’s next move aren’t just about Aston Martin. Ferrari is also a strong contender. But it’s worth noting that Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll reportedly met with Newey at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with a ‘big money’ offer on the table.

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack revealed that talks about Newey’s future started as soon as his departure from Red Bull was announced. ‘When someone like that is available on the market, I think eight teams started discussions immediately, or maybe even before,’ he told Formula 1. ‘So this is internal discussion and also discussions with him and the people around him. It will be quite interesting to see how this is going to wrestle out.’

Pressed on whether Aston Martin is among the interested parties, Krack confirmed, ‘Always. Everybody is interested.’

Adrian Newey, in a conversation on the Beyond the Grid podcast, mentioned that not working with Alonso or Lewis Hamilton has been one of his career regrets. With his upcoming free-agent status in 2025, he might just get his chance. Asked about his past decisions not to join Ferrari, Newey said, ‘Emotionally, I guess, to a point. Yes. But just as, for instance, working with Fernando and Lewis would have been fabulous. But it never happened. It’s just circumstance sometimes, that’s the way it is.’

Both Alonso and Hamilton are signed to multi-year deals with Aston Martin and Ferrari respectively, setting the stage for potential collaborations once Newey leaves Red Bull.

Newey’s impending departure from Red Bull has the F1 world buzzing with speculation. Whether he ends up at Aston Martin with Alonso or Ferrari with Hamilton, fans are eager to see where this legendary designer will go next.
