Audi’s F1 project takes a new direction with Mattia Binotto at the helm.

  • Binotto to replace Andreas Seidl as head of operations from August 1.
  • Audi aims for faster decisions and complete autonomy in F1 operations.
  • Chairman Oliver Hoffmann exits in major leadership shake-up.
  • Binotto brings over 25 years of F1 experience to Audi’s ambitious project.

Following a bombshell announcement, Audi’s F1 project is set for dramatic changes with Mattia Binotto stepping in. Slated to begin his new role on August 1, Binotto replaces Andreas Seidl as the head of their F1 operations. The hiring aims to create independence for the Audi team, which will debut on the F1 grid in 2026, evolving from the Sauber team.

In this shake-up, Oliver Hoffmann has also departed, and Audi has clarified the changes. By appointing Binotto as chief operating and technical officer, they want to ensure the autonomy and independence of their F1 project, entrusting Binotto with responsibility and accountability. According to Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, this move is crucial for making quicker, more authoritative decisions.

Döllner stated, “Our aim is to bring the entire Formula 1 project up to F1 speed by means of clear management structures, defined responsibilities, reduced interfaces, and efficient decision-making processes.” Therefore, Audi’s F1 team needs to act independently and swiftly to achieve these goals.

Mattia Binotto, who last held a position in F1 in 2022, brings over 25 years of extensive experience, particularly from his time at Ferrari, where he contributed significantly. Audi hopes his expertise will make a ‘decisive contribution’ to their F1 ambitions. Döllner expressed delight in securing Binotto, emphasizing his extensive background in the sport.

Meanwhile, one-half of Audi’s future F1 lineup is confirmed: Nico Hulkenberg will join from Haas for the 2025 season. This leaves one seat open, with departing Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz heavily linked to the spot.

Audi’s F1 team is geared up for an exciting new chapter with Mattia Binotto leading the charge.
