In a revelation that might surprise many, Franco Colapinto, an aspiring F1 driver, shared that his management had extensive discussions with Williams regarding a potential seat. However, when faced with the choice between Colapinto and Carlos Sainz, Williams opted for the ‘normal’ option, choosing the experienced Spaniard.
Months of speculation came to an end in late July when Sainz announced his multi-year contract with Williams starting in 2025. Teaming up with Alex Albon, who had already committed to a long-term deal with Williams, this move quashed Colapinto’s hopes of graduating from Formula 2 to Formula 1. The young driver, however, acknowledged that Sainz was the logical choice given his race-winning experience.
Colapinto expressed his understanding of Williams’ decision, stating, ‘Hope is always there and it’s the last thing you lose. But I have no doubt that more opportunities will come.’ He further added that Williams signing Sainz was a ‘very normal thing’ and beneficial for the team, emphasizing the value of having two seasoned drivers like Albon and Sainz.
The 21-year-old admitted that his managers had worked tirelessly for the opportunity, engaging in numerous discussions with Williams. Despite this, Colapinto tried to stay focused on his current tasks, recognizing the difficulties and setbacks that characterized his recent races due to factors beyond his control. Even with these challenges, he remains optimistic about his future opportunities in the sport.
Reflecting on his season, Colapinto noted that he achieved only one race win and acknowledged mistakes from both himself and his team. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating that success and failure are collective efforts. Earlier this season, he had the chance to drive for Williams in a practice session at the British Grand Prix, an experience that could bolster his future prospects.
Colapinto’s tenure with the Williams Driver Academy began last year when he competed in Formula 3, followed by his current stint in Formula 2. Despite the missed opportunity to join the F1 team, he maintains a positive outlook and is determined to work hard for another chance. He concluded with a light-hearted remark, saying, ‘We are going to work hard so that in 2026 Carlos has to leave.’
Although Franco Colapinto missed out on a coveted Williams F1 seat, his determination and positive outlook suggest that more opportunities are likely to come his way. His experience with the Williams Driver Academy and his resilience in facing challenges will undoubtedly serve him well in his quest for a future in Formula 1.
