Ferrari found some consolation at the Canadian Grand Prix with their impressive pit stop performance, despite a double retirement from the race.
Red Bull has dominated the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award for six years, but Ferrari showed they haven’t lost their edge in the pit lane. McLaren currently holds the world record for the fastest F1 pit stop, clocking in at an astonishing 1.80 seconds during the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. They broke the previous record of 1.82 seconds set by Red Bull in 2019, a feat made even more impressive given the heavier 18-inch wheels introduced in 2022.
The DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award, introduced in 2015, recognizes the team that excels in pit lane performance over the season. Points are awarded to the top 10 fastest individual pit stops at each race, mirroring the points system in the Drivers’ Championship. Red Bull remains the team to beat, having claimed the top spot for six consecutive years.
In the 2024 season, Ferrari started strong with the fastest stops for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz during the Bahrain Grand Prix. However, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was the first to break the two-second barrier this year, achieving a 1.90-second stop in China.
Ferrari managed to outpace Red Bull in Miami with a 1.94-second stop, narrowly beating Red Bull by 0.01 seconds. Despite Ferrari’s strong performance, Red Bull still holds eight of the top ten fastest stops of the season.
At Imola, Red Bull once again led the pack, but Mercedes placed second and fourth, earning the most points for the weekend. Monaco’s race, affected by a red flag, saw only six pit stops, with Red Bull emerging on top yet again.
Ferrari’s impressive pit stop performance continued in Canada, even though both Leclerc and Sainz retired from the race. They managed a 1-3 finish in the pit lane standings, although none of their stops made it to the season’s top ten fastest.
The current standings for the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award have Red Bull leading with 264 points, followed by Ferrari with 151 points and Mercedes with 137 points. McLaren is in fourth place with 107 points, and Aston Martin rounds out the top five with 77 points.
Despite not finishing the race, Ferrari’s pit crew showcased their skill in Canada, securing valuable points in the DHL Fastest Pit Stop standings. Red Bull continues to set the benchmark, but Ferrari’s recent performances indicate they’re not far behind.
