Amid the high-octane thrills of the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, an unexpected hazard emerged: grass fires. These fiery disruptions, triggered during the second practice session (FP2), prompted immediate action from the FIA to prevent further chaos.
The scorching post-summer temperatures at Suzuka Raceway had left a layer of dry grass along the track, making it a potential tinderbox. Sparks kicked up by the undercarriages of roaring Formula 1 cars sparked two separate fires in the latter half of FP2. The flames quickly spread, creating smoke that drifted ominously across the circuit and forcing officials to wave the red flags twice, halting the session.
In response to this fiery challenge, the FIA has taken a proactive stance. An FIA spokesperson explained that their priority is to implement preemptive measures to avoid more disruptions: “The grass has been cut as short as possible, and loose, dried grass has been removed from affected areas,” the spokesperson stated. Additional measures include dampening the grass before subsequent sessions and deploying specific response teams around the track to tackle any flare-ups immediately.
The situation at Suzuka is reminiscent of last year’s Chinese Grand Prix, where similar fire incidents prompted a comprehensive investigation by the FIA. Although weather conditions were different then—less hot and dry—a definitive explanation for the fires remains elusive. While sparks from the cars were a suspected trigger, it was unclear why they led to such aggressive blazes. A theory suggested that gases from under the ground at the Shanghai International Circuit, built on a swamp, might have contributed, a scenario not applicable to Suzuka.
Given the consistent weather forecast for the weekend, the FIA remains vigilant, emphasizing the importance of these measures to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the remaining sessions. The proactive approach at Suzuka highlights the continual challenges faced in the high-pressure environment of Formula 1 racing.
