In a surprising twist, former AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost revealed that he advised Red Bull to promote Yuki Tsunoda over Liam Lawson. However, this advice was ignored, leading to unexpected consequences.
As the 2025 F1 season unfolded, Red Bull found themselves in a tricky position. With Sergio Perez’s performance waning, the team had to decide who would race alongside Max Verstappen. Despite Tsunoda’s wealth of experience, the decision went to Lawson, a choice that quickly turned sour.
Lawson, though promising, managed only two races with Red Bull before facing demotion back to Racing Bulls. This decision left industry insiders puzzled as Tost had confidently recommended Tsunoda due to his experience and speed. Tost believed there was no contest when comparing the two drivers, and time seemed to prove him right.
Tsunoda, now racing for Red Bull, has shown an improvement on the track compared to Lawson. Tost suggested that, while Tsunoda scores points, he needs to enhance his aggressiveness during races. Although Tsunoda still trails Verstappen’s pace, Tost emphasizes the complexity of mastering tire management, which Tsunoda continues to learn. “Qualifying was quite good, but he needs to be more aggressive in the race,” said Tost. “But of course, we mustn’t forget that he still needs to get to know the car better.”
Tost’s insight did not end there. He maintained regular contact with Tsunoda, offering advice and words of encouragement. By observing Verstappen’s stellar performances, Tsunoda is learning the ropes of driving at Red Bull. Tost remarked, “I’m still in regular contact with him, and yes, he knew what to expect. He can only learn from Verstappen, who’s been putting in such a fantastic performance.”
From Tost’s perspective, Red Bull’s initial decision may have been a misstep, but with Tsunoda now in the seat, there is potential for growth and improvement. As Tsunoda adapts and learns, the choice to eventually go with him might prove fruitful.
