George Russell’s race at the Bahrain Grand Prix took an unexpected turn when electronic gremlins caused his DRS to malfunction, prompting an FIA investigation.
In the midst of the Bahrain Grand Prix, excitement took a technical twist as George Russell found himself battling unexpected electronic issues. Midway through the 57-lap race, Russell’s name dropped down the timing screens, not because of a crash, but due to malfunctioning electronics that unwittingly opened his DRS. The mishap was traced back to a peculiar incident where pressing the radio button triggered the DRS flap to open. “We were having all sorts of failures, and basically we did an override on the DRS,” Russell recounted. Despite the flap being open for just a fraction of a second, the incident drew scrutiny with Russell maintaining he gained no advantage, finishing a hair’s breadth ahead of Lando Norris.
Compounding the challenge were additional technical glitches. Russell experienced a brake-by-wire failure, causing unpredictable behavior in his car’s braking system. “It felt all under control and then suddenly we had a brake-by-wire failure,” he explained, noting how the brake pedal’s behavior became erratic. Adding to these problems was a malfunctioning steering wheel, making it a Herculean task to fend off the pursuing Lando Norris. “One more lap, he would have overtaken me,” Russell admitted.
Russell’s race strategy was further tested with the team’s bold decision to switch to soft tires after a safety car period, a move he described as “audacious.” Despite this, he managed to make the tires last, demonstrating skill and resilience. Reflecting on the results, Russell expressed optimism, underscoring that consistently strong performances on various circuits boosted the team’s confidence. “Oscar [Piastri] was in a league of his own,” he acknowledged, tipping his hat to the McLaren driver, “but for ourselves, it’s been four races, three podiums, all on different types of tracks, so it gives us confidence going into the future.”
The Bahrain Grand Prix was a testament to George Russell’s skill as he navigated through an array of technical issues. His ability to maintain composure under pressure, despite the challenges, showcased his resolve and talent. As the FIA steps in to review the incident, Russell’s narrative remains one of determination and adaptability, pointing to an exciting season ahead.
