Álex Palou, a prominent figure in IndyCar, is perfectly content with his decision not to pursue a Formula 1 career. He happily embraces his two IndyCar titles, believing they hold more value than having zero wins in Formula 1.
Despite his previous involvement with the Formula 1 ladder, including time in GP3, Formula 3, and Formula 2, as well as serving as McLaren’s reserve driver in 2023, Palou has found greater fame and fulfillment in the United States. He is currently in the running for his third IndyCar championship.
Palou’s relationship with McLaren soured due to a contract dispute, resulting in a lawsuit. This made it seem unlikely that he would ever make it to the Formula 1 grid. However, recent reports suggest that he is being considered for a seat with Sauber, which will become Audi in 2026, for the 2025 season.
In an interview with Marca, Palou shared his positive experiences in IndyCar, stating he enjoys the competition and daily challenges. He also made a pointed comparison, noting that drivers like Williams’ Alex Albon have not yet secured any Formula 1 wins. Palou stated, ‘I’d rather have two IndyCar titles than no Formula 1 wins at all.’
Reflecting on his attempts to reach Formula 1, Palou expressed no regrets, stating, ‘I tried, it didn’t work out and that’s it. I haven’t lost anything.’ He emphasized his satisfaction with his achievements in IndyCar and mentioned that he does not believe Formula 1 has missed out by his absence.
Álex Palou remains confidently committed to his IndyCar career, while speculation about a potential move to Audi’s Formula 1 team continues to build.
