Oscar Piastri claimed the spotlight at the second practice session in Imola, leading a fierce charge by McLaren ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
In a session filled with strategic qualifying simulations, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri emerged on top, setting the fastest time of 1:15.293. He edged out his teammate Lando Norris by a mere 0.025 seconds, proving McLaren’s might on the track.
While McLaren soared, Ferrari faced challenges. Both Charles Leclerc and his teammate reported brake issues, with Leclerc describing the situation as “horrendous.” This brake struggle seemed to stifle their performance during the practice.
Franco Colapinto became a notable obstacle for other drivers, acting as a mobile chicane that disrupted several competitors, including reigning champion Max Verstappen, who had his own technical woes, complaining about something touching his foot during acceleration.
The session wasn’t without its dramatic moments. Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls lost control and collided with the wall at the Tamburello Chicane, leading to a red flag as his car had to be retrieved. Despite this, the track went green with a brief three-minute window remaining, allowing teams to make final adjustments.
Bortoleto ended the practice on a slightly sour note with a yellow flag infringement, but it was McLaren’s day to shine as they finished strong, setting the pace for the upcoming racing weekend.
With McLaren leading the field and notable challenges for other teams, the stage is set for an unpredictable Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The next rounds of practice and the race itself promise to deliver more excitement and fierce competition.
