Jos Verstappen experienced a weekend of striking contrasts as he participated in the Ypres Rally while his son, Max Verstappen, claimed victory in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. The elder Verstappen’s attempt in the rally took an unexpected turn when he crashed out, though he walked away from the incident unscathed.

Verstappen, competing in a Belgian Rally Championship event, initially showed promise with a solid start on Friday. However, during the fourth stage, a flat tire caused his standing to plummet. The tire blowout, a result of striking a rock during a fast left turn, forced him to drive on the rim for over eight kilometers. Despite this hurdle, Jos held onto hope, expressing that while victory was unlikely, the rally had much left to offer.

As the competition continued, Jos made efforts to regain his position on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, his rally campaign ended abruptly after a serious crash in the forest stage at Kemmelberg. The incident, widely circulated through social media, was significant but thankfully did not result in injuries for either Jos or his co-driver, Renaud Jamoul.

Before this setback, Jos had shown his rallying prowess by winning the Rally of Wervik just a week earlier. This victory, achieved in his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, served as a robust preparation for the Ypres Rally. Jos was optimistic post-Wervik, having felt the car performed exceptionally well, and believed the tests done would be beneficial for Ypres.

Jos Verstappen’s rallying pursuits are occasional yet passionate, allowing him to indulge his motorsport enthusiasm. His unexpected crash during Ypres adds a dramatic chapter to his rallying adventures, reminiscent of the unpredictable nature of motorsports.

Jos Verstappen’s Ypres Rally journey ended abruptly, contrasting sharply with his prior success and his son’s triumph.
