Lance Stroll spilled the beans about Aston Martin’s rollercoaster journey this season, and it’s been quite a ride.
- The team started strong in 2023 but began to slip behind as others caught up.
- Admitting they went the wrong way in development, Aston Martin decided to change their approach.
- Despite some bumps, they’re hopeful and pushing forward, learning from past mistakes.
- Double-points at Silverstone offers a glimmer of hope as they aim for the top again.
Lance Stroll didn’t hold back in admitting that Aston Martin veered off course with their development strategy. He said, ‘Ultimately, we took a bit of a wrong direction.’ Despite starting the 2023 season as one of the fastest, they began to lag as other teams improved.
Stroll and his teammate Fernando Alonso managed to score double points at Silverstone, hinting at a possible comeback. However, their overall performance this season has been underwhelming, sitting 128 points behind their tally at the same time last year. Most of those points have gone to Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes.
Clearly, it hasn’t been smooth sailing. Stroll acknowledged that past upgrades didn’t always deliver the expected results. ‘I think we’ve done a lot of exploring and a lot of aero testing over the last 12 months, every upgrade we’ve brought, we haven’t seen the benefit that we were hoping to see over the last year,’ he admitted. This realization has set them on a new path.
Stroll emphasized the team’s resilience and drive to improve. ‘We were there beginning of last year,’ he reflected, ‘we had a quick car and some podiums, and a lot of top fives and stuff, but I think we still know we need to grow as a team and be stronger and more robust.’
Despite the setbacks, Stroll remains optimistic. With a more focused approach, they hope to climb back up the rankings. The team is working hard behind the scenes to fix issues and speed up their car. While there’s no overnight success, the Silverstone performance shows they might be back on track.
Aston Martin’s journey is a testament to learning and adapting in the fast-paced world of Formula 1.
