Lando Norris’s run at the Spanish Grand Prix brought him face-to-face with Max Verstappen, but did his focus on the Red Bull driver cost him a better position?

F1 press conference host, Tom Clarkson, later remarked that Norris’s fixation on Verstappen might have been his undoing. “Lando himself admitted to not having the perfect start, even though he believes it was better than Max’s initial launch,” Clarkson shared on the F1 Nation podcast. “Yet, by moving too far right, he inadvertently granted Russell a free path around the outside of Turn 1. Had he been more central, Norris could have potentially challenged Verstappen more closely.”
Providing additional insight, former McLaren driver Pedro de la Rosa echoed that Norris’s instinctive reaction was typical for any driver in such a high-pressure moment. “You might be right,” De la Rosa acknowledged. “In the heat of the race, a driver tends to fixate on immediate threats—in this case, Max. It’s a natural, albeit risky, move that any racer might consider.”
Moreover, Clarkson emphasized that Norris’s assertive maneuver against Verstappen could arguably be seen as a declaration. “Historically, Lando and Max have rarely been neck and neck since Norris joined F1 in 2019. However, this aggressive move to squeeze Max toward the grass signaled Lando’s emergence as a formidable competitor, urging Verstappen to watch his back,” Clarkson noted.
De la Rosa suggested that Norris could have been even more aggressive. “Honestly, I believe Lando could have applied more pressure,” he stated. “By nudging Max slightly earlier toward the track limits, Norris might have put Verstappen in a tougher spot, seeing that Russell was parallel. But hindsight, as always, is perfect.”
Despite this, Lando’s performance remains commendable and showcases his evolving skill set on the racetrack. As tensions rise with each race, the dynamics between top drivers like Norris and Verstappen continue to captivate audiences, illustrating the fine line between risk and reward.
