Lando Norris, who teamed up with Carlos Sainz at McLaren from 2019 to 2020, thinks his friend should have headed to Red Bull next season. Norris admits to being biased in his opinion, but he feels Sainz deserves the opportunity.
Sainz is moving to Williams next season to join Alex Albon on a multi-year deal. This move came despite interest from Audi and Alpine, marking a significant win for Williams.
James Vowles, Williams’ team principal, was surprised that neither Mercedes nor Red Bull signed Sainz. Mercedes has an open cockpit, and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez is under pressure despite his contract running through 2026.
Norris expressed his thoughts to Sky F1, saying, ‘Honestly, the easy one is just to say Red Bull – he should have gone there in my eyes.’ He adds, ‘Carlos deserves a lot. He’s one of the best drivers in Formula 1.’
Norris is happy that Sainz remains in F1 and believes the Sainz-Albon partnership will be beneficial for Williams and the sport. He acknowledges that many people share his view that Red Bull would’ve been a better fit for Sainz.
Norris is content with Sainz staying in Formula 1 and sees a promising future for him at Williams.
