- Despite the fierce competition, Norris maintains that his off-track demeanor doesn’t impact his racing.
Lando Norris and Max Verstappen have been friends off the track, but their 2024 season sees them frequently competing wheel-to-wheel. Norris, now a consistent front-runner, has eliminated Red Bull’s earlier dominance, similar to what Mercedes achieved.
Their first major clash occurred at the Austrian GP. As they fought for the lead, both cars suffered punctures – a disaster for Verstappen, who finished in P5, and race-ending for Norris. Although initial tensions ran high, both drivers quickly moved past the incident.
Norris forecasts more such scenarios, not just with Verstappen but with other drivers too. He explained, “I expect to crash more in the future with different people, with Max. Not because it’s an expectation of I expect to crash with them – it’s just those scenarios and circumstances always happen.” With potentially five to ten more years in F1, he believes these situations are unavoidable.
Currently, Norris poses the closest threat to Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing by 78 points. When faced with criticism about his ‘nice guy’ image possibly hindering his title ambitions, Norris responded emphatically, “I don’t care what people say. I’m a nice guy and I try to be respectful in every way that I can. But that has absolutely zero relevance for what happens on track.” He added that he could adopt a more ruthless persona if needed but prefers to stay true to himself, balancing competitiveness with enjoyment.
As Verstappen aims for a fourth consecutive World Championship title, Red Bull faces a serious challenge in the Constructors’ Championship from McLaren. With 10 rounds left in the season, McLaren is only 42 points behind.
With tensions high and the stakes even higher, the Norris-Verstappen rivalry is one to watch.
