It was an intense Hungarian Grand Prix for McLaren fans. Lando Norris wasn’t keen on discussing the team orders that had him giving up the lead to his teammate, Oscar Piastri. McLaren’s strategic moves ended up putting Norris in a tricky position during the last moments of the race.
Piastri had led for most of the race with Norris trailing in second. When the time came for a pit stop, Norris was brought in first to fend off competitors like Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Max Verstappen. However, this led to Norris emerging ahead of Piastri, creating an unexpected challenge for the team.
Norris was reluctant to give up his lead, even as his race engineer, Will Joseph, reminded him that team effort is key to winning championships. With a few laps remaining, Norris gave in and let Piastri take the lead. This decision ultimately squashed the rising tensions.
After the race, Norris kept his comments brief but positive. Smiling, he acknowledged the team’s hard work: ‘Amazing day for us, as a team. I think that’s the main thing, honestly.’ He added that both he and Piastri had performed admirably and deserved the 1-2 finish.
Piastri, who secured his maiden victory, admitted he was nervous about whether Norris would follow the orders. ‘The longer you leave it, the more you get a bit nervous but, no, it was well executed by the team and I think it was the right thing,’ he said. He praised the team’s strategy and felt he was in the right place to capitalize on it.
In the end, McLaren celebrated a successful race with a 1-2 finish, thanks to teamwork and strategic decisions.
