Lewis Hamilton is all set to receive the same front wing upgrade as George Russell for the Canadian Grand Prix. He passed on the opportunity to decide who’d get the new part via a coin toss in Monaco.
At the Monaco Grand Prix, George Russell revealed that he and Hamilton were supposed to flip a coin to determine which driver would get the single updated front wing available. Russell mentioned that after testing it in the simulator, Hamilton was okay with him using it in Monte Carlo, considering the risks attached to having just one new part.
Hamilton acknowledged that opting out of using the upgraded wing in Monaco meant he was ‘automatically going to lose two-tenths’ in qualifying, but he saw a positive effect of the new part on the W15 driven by Russell. Confirming the upgrade for his car in Canada, Hamilton shared his excitement about the team consistently bringing in new enhancements.
Russell told Channel 4, ‘There was one front wing this weekend, and it was agreed on Tuesday that we’d do a coin toss and see who got it. Lewis said he’d tried it on the sim and was happy for me to use it this weekend because it doesn’t go without risk. If we made a mistake in qualifying and damaged it, obviously that’s one front wing that we won’t ever be able to use again, and you’d have to start from the pit lane. I was happy to take that risk using it, and I thought it was a belated birthday present he gave me.’ When asked if the coin toss happened, Russell replied, ‘No, we didn’t do the coin toss.’
Hamilton emphasized his dedication to giving his all every weekend and pushing for the team. He expressed happiness over the team’s recent upgrades over the last three races and looks forward to further narrowing the performance gap in upcoming races.
As the Canadian Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on Hamilton to see how he leverages the new upgrade to enhance his performance on the track.
