Max Verstappen is not holding back on the team radio despite F1’s attempts to clean up radio communications.

  • During the Hungarian GP, Verstappen was fuming over Red Bull’s strategy failures.
  • F1’s CEO reminded everyone that clean communication is vital for the sport’s image.
  • Verstappen insists his aggressive radio messages are crucial for racing success.
  • The whole issue raises questions about how much should be broadcast to fans.

During the Hungarian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen’s frustration was clear as he lashed out at his team over the radio. Angry about Red Bull’s strategy, he even clashed with Lewis Hamilton late in the race.

Verstappen didn’t mince words. “No mate, don’t give me that s***,” he yelled at his race engineer. His bluntness continued: “You guys gave me this s*** strategy, okay? I’m trying to rescue what’s left. F***!”

After the race, Verstappen had strong words for his critics, saying they could “f*** off.” He made it clear that he has no plans to change his blunt approach over the team radio.

“You know, people that don’t like my language – then don’t listen in, turn the volume down,” Verstappen said. He believes clear and timely communication can make or break a race strategy.

At a recent F1 Commission meeting, CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasized the need to keep radio messages clean. He reminded teams that these communications are broadcast live and can be heard by younger fans.

Verstappen was asked if he thought such radio messages should be broadcast at all. His response was unapologetic: “Well, that’s also a thing that, in other sports, people say things but they don’t have a mic attached to their mouths.”

Stefano Domenicali also highlighted that drivers are role models and should behave accordingly. Despite this, Verstappen firmly believes that open criticism within his team contributes to their success.

Verstappen added, “In this world that we’re living now, I feel that a lot of people can’t take criticism anymore like it used to be. And I don’t want to end up like that.”

The debate over radio communication in F1 continues, but Verstappen isn’t backing down.
