Oscar Piastri clinched his first-ever F1 victory in Hungary, making him the 115th different winner in the sport’s history. The Australian driver led from the first corner and showcased impeccable skill throughout the race.
However, the victory wasn’t without its drama. A late pit stop could’ve handed the win to teammate Lando Norris. McLaren, concerned about Lewis Hamilton in P3 on fresh tires, offered Norris an undercut on Piastri. Still, they assured Piastri that Norris would return the spot, which he did, but only by the 68th lap of the 70-lap race.
Piastri admitted, “I don’t think I was really concerned. The only thing I was concerned about a bit was if there was a safety car then it would have taken the situation out of our hands.” This trust in his team and Norris paid off, and Piastri’s confidence never wavered.
Interestingly, Piastri skipped the famous shoey celebration, a tradition of fellow Aussie Daniel Ricciardo. Laughing, he said, “The shoey is Danny Ric’s thing. I mean I’m going to get roped into it because I’m an Aussie, but I don’t know, I’ll try and think of something new.”
Piastri’s victory, however, came amidst a backdrop of controversial team orders from McLaren, adding a layer of complexity to his maiden win. Yet, his calm demeanor and strategic mind helped him navigate these waters smoothly.
Piastri’s maiden victory marks a promising start for the newcomer, proving his potential in the world of Formula 1.
