Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, the FIA has unveiled the first images of the all-new 2026 Formula 1 cars.

The FIA’s new 2026 car concept is set to revolutionize Formula 1. Lighter and more agile, these new cars will be 30kg lighter than current models and feature significant reductions in width and wheelbase. The new cars will be equipped with active aero technology and will use fully sustainable fuel as part of new power unit regulations.

The wheelbase of the cars will be reduced from 3600mm to 3400mm, while the width will drop from 2000mm to 1900mm. The maximum floor width will also be reduced by 150mm. Although the wheels will retain the 18-inch size introduced in 2022, the front tyres will be narrowed by 25mm and the rear tyres by 30mm, with minimal expected impact on grip.

Aerodynamics will see major changes, including a 30% reduction in downforce and a 55% reduction in drag. Key features include a narrower front wing, elimination of front wheel arches, and the introduction of in-washing wheel wake control boards in front of the sidepods. At the rear, an active three-element rear wing with simplified endplates will replace the traditional design, and the lower beam wing will be removed.

The new cars will have a partially flat floor and a lower-powered diffuser to reduce ground effect. Enhanced safety measures will include a two-stage front impact structure, improved side intrusion protection, and increased roll hoop loads from 16G to 20G. Additionally, the rear wing endplate lights will be made brighter for better visibility.

Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA’s single-seater director, described the new regulations as a ‘moderate revolution,’ highlighting the focus on making the cars lighter, faster, and more agile, while also pushing the boundaries of technology. ‘With this set of regulations, the FIA has sought to develop a new generation of cars that are fully in touch with the DNA of Formula 1,’ he said. ‘Lighter, more powerful and more focused on driver skill, the 2026 FIA Formula One Technical Regulations have been designed to provide closer racing among drivers, increase the competition between teams and to improve the spectacle.’

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem added, ‘Our aim, together with Formula 1, was to produce a car that was right for the future of the sport’s elite category. We believe we have achieved that goal.’

The new 2026 rules are expected to be officially ratified at the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council meeting on June 28.

The unveiling of the 2026 car concept marks an exciting step forward for Formula 1, promising closer racing, increased competition, and cutting-edge technology.
