Carlos Sainz is keeping his options open despite the aggressive courtship from Williams’ boss James Vowles, who has been pushing relentlessly to secure him for next season.
Sainz, currently fielding offers from both Williams and Sauber/Audi for 2025, remains undecided about his next move. Both teams have made it clear that he is their top choice for a new contract, with Williams particularly stepping up their efforts recently.
“I appreciate James’ interest and kind words,” said Sainz. “But I haven’t made up my mind yet about where I’m going to go next year. Right now, I’m too focused on fighting for podiums or wins every weekend. It’s very difficult to think about the future when every weekend is so important.”
Sainz emphasized that he needs time to consider his options properly, indicating that he has yet to have a serious discussion with his management team. “I’m going to need some time to sit down with my management and myself to decide where I want to go. Right now, there’s nothing decided,” he stated.
When asked about the timeline for his decision, Sainz admitted he is unsure. “I don’t know if I can wait until the summer break or if the decision will come earlier. I honestly don’t know at this point in time.”
Williams has been in advanced talks with Sainz, aiming to team him up with Alex Albon next year. Despite not currently contending for podiums, Williams believes they can provide an environment where Sainz can thrive.
Vowles, in an interview with Sky Sports F1, explained why Sainz should consider joining Williams. “There’s a reason why I’m here: Williams isn’t the same team it was three years ago. Just the fact that we’re talking to Carlos shows we’ve changed our approach. We want two world-class drivers to be part of our team going forward.”
Vowles also highlighted the strides Williams is making towards future competitiveness. “In 2026, we will have one of the best power units, if not the best. We’ve been gathering incredible talent over the last 12 months. The world is changing, and someone like Carlos would fit very well within our ambitious plans. But ultimately, the choice is his.”
Sainz remains focused on his current season and is not rushing a decision about his future. While Williams’ ambitions and persistence are clear, Sainz’s final choice will come after thorough consideration.
