Carlos Sainz can’t help but chuckle at the rumor mill that’s currently churning out stories about his future in Formula 1. With reports flying around that the Spanish driver has already signed a contract for 2025, Sainz is setting the record straight—nothing is set in stone.
Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Sainz addressed the speculative reports head-on. According to him, the idea that he has already signed a deal is laughable and far from the truth. “I’ve seen reports in the media—I’m not sure if it’s in Spain—saying I’ve signed. When you look at those things, it makes me laugh,” he said.
The offers on the table for Sainz include Sauber/Audi and Williams, while it’s clear that doors have closed at Red Bull and Mercedes. Wild speculation had suggested that Sainz had made up his mind. However, Sainz was quick to debunk these claims.
“The only thing I can tell you is there is nothing locked in,” Sainz emphasized. “It makes me laugh, knowing that sometimes this goes a bit unpunished in a way for some media reports. It concerns me that people can get away with that kind of stuff without [consequences].”
Looking ahead to 2025 and 2026, Sainz knows he’s in a bit of a ‘lottery.’ “For me, 2025 is equally important to 2026. Why? Because I think 2026 is a lottery,” he explained. Sainz elaborated that while 2025 prospects are somewhat predictable, 2026 is a different story and nobody can be sure of the outcome.
Despite knowing for a while that a Red Bull seat is out of reach following Sergio Perez’s contract renewal, Sainz isn’t short of options. “Obviously, on my personal conversations with the team, this was something I knew for a long time now. So yeah, nothing to say, nothing to add. Still, plenty of options on the table,” he noted.
One might expect Sainz to feel frustrated about missing out on top seats, especially given his race-winning form for Ferrari. But Sainz remains philosophical. “There’s no real frustration. It’s Formula 1. It’s been part of Formula 1 and there’s so many other things involved inside the teams that it is obviously always complicated to understand the dynamics of Formula 1 when you see it from the outside,” he said.
Sainz continued, “But when you see it from the inside, everyone has a reason to take the decisions they have taken. In Spain, we say ‘everyday bread,’ which I’ve been seeing in Formula 1 for so many years.”
Carlos Sainz may be navigating a maze of speculation and rumors, but one thing is clear: he has multiple options and is taking his time to decide the best path for his Formula 1 career. As the Canadian Grand Prix approaches, Sainz is focused and unfazed, regardless of what the rumor mill says.
