Valtteri Bottas, once a formidable force with Mercedes, might be gearing up for a comeback, but not everyone sees it as a straightforward return to glory.
Kimi Antonelli, soon to join the Formula 1 grid, may need to consider Bottas’ expected return as more than just a simple reunion with his former team. Juan Pablo Montoya recently voiced concerns, suggesting this move reflects Mercedes’ desire for a ‘safe reserve’ in case Antonelli struggles.
Antonelli, set to advance to a race seat alongside George Russell, leaves the question of who will fill the reserve driver position for Mercedes. Bottas, with ten Grand Prix victories under his belt, emerges as the probable choice, especially given his departure from Sauber and limited opportunities elsewhere. Red Bull remains the only team with an open slot, making Bottas’ return to Mercedes seem all the more plausible.
Mercedes has hinted at Bottas’ comeback, especially after a nostalgic social media post featuring the Finnish racer. Montoya’s commentary suggests this is a strategic choice for Mercedes, yet a potential red flag for Antonelli. “The move by Mercedes is interesting,” he shared with W Radio Colombia, adding, “I think (it would say) they are not very confident about Antonelli and obviously they are not going to say that publicly.”
He elaborated on Antonelli’s challenges, pointing out his mixed performances; a dazzling yet reckless appearance at Monza, followed by a cautious yet underwhelming performance in Mexico, finishing 12th. Montoya argued that Mercedes must find the right balance in supporting Antonelli’s development, highlighting the necessity of a backup plan like Bottas in case of mishaps.
Ultimately, Montoya perceives the Bottas decision as a prudent safety net, one that should motivate Antonelli to enhance his performance. He indicated that with Bottas waiting in the wings, Antonelli should feel the pressure to ‘get his act together.’
While Bottas potentially waits in the wings, ready to step in if needed, Antonelli faces the challenge of proving his mettle on the F1 stage. Mercedes’ strategy might be shrewd, but it places a spotlight on Antonelli’s performance, pushing him to rise to the occasion amid the looming presence of an experienced racer like Bottas.
