Williams is optimistic about landing Carlos Sainz for its 2025 Formula 1 lineup, according to team boss James Vowles.
As the Belgian Grand Prix approaches, Williams is increasingly hopeful of convincing Carlos Sainz to join their team. The team, based in Grove, has openly expressed its desire to have Sainz race alongside Alexander Albon.
However, Sainz is still considering multiple offers for the next season, including proposals from Sauber/Audi and Alpine, making his decision process a tense waiting game for all involved.
Despite the uncertainty, James Vowles, Williams’ team principal, believes the odds are now in favor of his team. He recently stated, ‘Out of 100, more than 50%. How’s that? How confident am I? I think the odds are in our favor. But I’ve been stung by this already once this year. So, let’s see.’
Vowles has set a self-imposed deadline to finalize the 2025 lineup before the summer break. He’s hopeful everything will be sorted within this timeframe, but he acknowledges the complexity of the situation.
Sainz’s career decision is crucial for him, explaining his cautious approach. He’s carefully evaluating all options to avoid any regrets. ‘The reason why I’m doing this is when I commit, I need to commit with all my heart and my soul, 100% – and to do that means I can’t have any doubts,’ Sainz shared.
Vowles fully understands Sainz’s need for time. Their late-night discussions reveal the challenges Sainz faces, including offers from some of the world’s top teams. ‘It’s interesting conversations he and I have had pretty late into a few nights,’ Vowles said, acknowledging the allure of these opportunities.
While Sainz considers his options, Vowles remains clear that Sainz is his top choice. ‘I want excellence within the team,’ Vowles stated. ‘So out of all those, the top of the list, and I’ve said it from the start, and I’ll maintain it here now as well, is Carlos.’
Rumors have circulated that Sainz might be offered an exit clause for potential future openings at Red Bull or Mercedes, but Vowles dismissed these claims. ‘There was only a handful of people in the world that know what we’re talking about. That’s not even within the team as well,’ he said.
Vowles also mentioned that his second preferred option is Valtteri Bottas. However, his focus remains on securing Sainz. ‘In adversity last year, he won a race, and he did it in a bloody intelligent way, against some of the best individuals,’ Vowles praised Sainz’s performance.
As the deadline looms, the future of Sainz in Formula 1 remains uncertain, but Williams remains optimistic and ready to welcome him to their team.
With a week left until the summer break, the anticipation builds as Williams waits for Sainz’s decision. Only time will tell if their optimism pays off.
